Screen sleep and screen savers on an OLED Mac
A sleeping display draws no current, so the wear stops completely. A screen saver keeps the panel lit and moves the load around. One of those is protection.
Display sleep is the only setting in macOS that stops OLED wear rather than redistributing it. A screen saver keeps the panel lit and moves bright content around, which is better than a frozen desktop and far weaker than an off display. Set display sleep to 5 minutes on battery and 10 on power, treat the screen saver as decoration, and remember that the menu bar stays lit for the whole delay before either one starts.
Why an off display is different from a dark one
Each OLED subpixel makes its own light, and it ages in proportion to how hard and how long it is driven. Black on an OLED means that subpixel is at or near zero output, so it ages barely at all. That is the reason dark mode helps and the reason a bright white document window at full brightness is the worst thing you can leave on screen.
When macOS turns the display off, nothing is being driven. The wear clock stops. No other setting on the Mac does that. Lower brightness slows the clock, dark mode slows it, a wallpaper change barely touches it, and display sleep pauses it outright.
That is why the idle settings matter more on OLED than they ever did on LCD. On an LCD the backlight burns its hours regardless of what is on screen, so people learned that screen savers were about entertainment rather than protection. On OLED the idle policy is a real lever.
The settings, and what to put in them
macOS splits the idle behaviour across two places in System Settings.
Lock Screen holds the timers.
- Start Screen Saver when inactive. How long the desktop sits untouched before the screen saver takes over.
- Turn display off on battery when inactive.
- Turn display off on power adapter when inactive.
Screen Saver holds the choice of screen saver itself.
For an OLED, set the display-off timers short and the screen saver timer to Never, or to a value shorter than the display-off timer if you like seeing one. A sensible pair is 5 minutes on battery and 10 minutes on power. If you present or watch video, macOS already suppresses sleep during full-screen playback in most apps, so a short timer is less disruptive than it sounds.
The trap is a screen saver set to start before the display sleeps, combined with a display-sleep timer of Never. That configuration keeps a lit panel running all night. It is the default-feeling setup that does the most harm.
Screen savers: what they are worth
A screen saver is not useless on OLED. A good one keeps bright regions moving, which spreads load the same way panel-level pixel shift does, and that argument is set out in does pixel shifting prevent OLED burn-in.
Ranked from best to worst for a panel:
- Display off. No current, no wear.
- An all-black or near-black screen saver. Very low output, panel still powered.
- A moving screen saver with dark content, such as a slow drifting image on a dark field.
- Apple's aerial and dynamic screen savers. Beautiful, and among the brightest full-screen content your Mac will ever display for hours at a time. Skies and snow fields are large bright areas at high output.
- A static photo screen saver. A fixed bright image parked in one place is the exact failure mode you are trying to avoid.

The gap nobody counts
Set display sleep to 10 minutes and picture a normal day. You leave the desk for coffee, a call, lunch, someone at the door. Twenty short absences at 10 minutes each is over three hours of screen time you are not present for, and for that whole period the desktop is exactly as it was, including the menu bar.
The menu bar is the worst content on the screen for this. It is bright, high contrast, fixed to the pixel, and present in every one of those idle windows, on top of every hour you spend at the desk. Shortening the timer shrinks the gap. It does not close it, and it does nothing for the working hours, which is the larger number by far. External OLED monitors have their own timers
If your OLED is an external monitor, it has a second set of controls in its own on-screen menu, and they run independently of macOS. Most panels offer a sleep or standby delay, a pixel-refresh cycle that runs on power-down or after a number of hours, and logo dimming.
Two things follow from that. Leave the monitor's protections enabled, since they cost you nothing on a desktop. And make sure the monitor's own standby delay is not longer than the macOS display-sleep timer in a way that leaves the panel showing a "no signal" banner, which is bright, static, and centred. A monitor that displays that banner for an hour is doing the opposite of protecting itself.
Set the timers, then deal with the bar
Display sleep at 5 and 10 minutes, screen saver off or dark, monitor protections on. That is the idle side handled, and it is worth doing in the two minutes it takes.
